Common Questions

Below are some of the most common questions we receive along with the answers.

How long are tuition sessions?

  • Primary Studenst: Typically 30 mins depending on the needs and age of the student

  • GCSE students: Typically 1 hour outside exam periods. Around exam time, sessions may extend to 1.5 hours if needed

  • A-level students: Usually 1–2 hours, depending on the student’s needs and how close we are to exams

What happens in a typical session?

Every session is tailored to the student’s age, ability, and learning style. Here’s what a session usually includes:

  1. Homework Review
    We start by going over any homework set during the previous session and discussing any difficulties.

  2. Learning Objectives
    Together, we identify what we will focus on and assess existing knowledge to avoid repeating what’s already secure.

  3. Interactive Learning
    A mix of activities and resources may be used, including:

    • Exam-style questions

    • Discussions & PowerPoint presentations

    • Mind maps & card-sorts

    • Research activities

    • Practical science (where possible)

    • Educational games

  4. Progress Review
    We finish by reviewing progress against the goals. Areas needing more attention are noted for future sessions.

💡 Homework may be set to support learning—only with parental agreement.

Where does tuition take place?

  • Tuition may be online or in the home where required; however it needs to also,-

  • Keep tuition affordable

  • Maintain an efficient schedule

  • •    Provide instant access to all resources

Do you offer online sessions?

  • Yes! we offer live online tuition via Zoom or Skype, using an interactive whiteboard shared in real time.
    It’s ideal for:

  • Students who prefer homeschooling, or need to be able to focus in small groups

  • Families who prefer the convenience of home-based learning

  • Situations where travel is difficult (e.g. bad weather)

  • Most students adapt quickly and enjoy the online experience—building rapport is rarely a problem!

Do you have the relevant checks and insurances?

  • I hold a clean enhanced DBS certificate (available on request)

  • While not a legal requirement, I hold Public Liability Insurance, to reflect my commitment to high standards of professionalism.

What happens if we are running late?

  • If you're delayed, please let me know. I usually have a 15-minute buffer between sessions and may be able to extend the time.

  • If you're more than 15 minutes late, the lost time may not be made up.

What subjects are offered?

  • GCSE: Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry & Physics, Humanities, French, German

  • A-Level: Biology, Chemistry & Physics, Maths,  Further Maths, German, Business

  • KS3: Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry & Physics, History, DT, German, French and Humanities

  • KS1, KS2, KS3: phonics

  • Primary: Maths and English, Biology, Chemistry & Physics, History, German, French and Humanities

Do I need to pay for cancelled lessons?

Lessons cancelled with more than 24 hours’ notice will not be charged.
However, lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice may be charged at the full lesson rate.

What if I cancel frequently?

To ensure fairness and availability for all students, We reserve the right to end tuition permanently if cancellations become frequent. This helps maintain an efficient and reliable service for everyone.

How do I end tuition?

If your child no longer requires tuition, please give at least one month’s notice. This allows me to manage my availability and offer the slot to another student.
Similarly, if I need to end our tuition arrangement, I will provide a minimum of one month’s notice.

If your child has completed the exams they were receiving support for, it will generally be assumed that tuition will come to an end—unless you let me know you wish to continue.
